Environment:

  • IBM Power servers, VIOS, and AIX LPARs (workloads including SAP and Oracle DB)
  • IBM Storwize V7000 storage
  • PowerHA (HACMP) cluster
  • Mixed storage provisioning strategies: via NPIV and vSCSI

 

Task: Non-disruptive migration of the environment from legacy IBM V7000s to new FS5200 storage devices. Unify storage provisioning to NPIV – vSCSI to NPIV migration for some LPARs.


What was done:

  • Design and capacity/performance sizing of the target storage solution
  • Delivery and physical installation of devices
  • SAN reconfiguration
  • Configuration of new devices and provisioning of resources
  • Migration planning, including construction of detailed runbooks for each environment
  • Lab testing and proof of concept (PoC) of the proposed plan
  • Actual migration of storage resources

The migration was performed non-disruptively for all workloads, leveraging AIX LVM and thoroughly planned PowerHA (HACMP) cluster management.

Large health insurance company

Environment:

  • 2x IBM Power 770 servers with 39 expansion drawers and
a significant number of internal disks (500+) mounted in 6 racks each, running IBM and operating system

 

Task: Physical relocation of one of the servers to another location.
Migration of some storage hardware drawers from one server to another.


What was done:

  • In-depth planning, especially for storage hardware migration between machines, including drawers, disk controllers, and mirrored disk drives, ensuring data integrity
  • Upgrade of IBM and operating system
  • Physical relocation and cabling of the equipment

During this operation, 10 expansion drawers with 212 drives and 22 disk controllers were migrated from one machine to another.

Mid-sized manufacturing company

Environment:

  • IBM Power server with internal disk storage subsystem, IBM and operating system (main workload: ERP system)

Task: Replacement of legacy  server utilizing with internal disks with new infrastructure based on external storage with high availability HyperSwap functionality.
Creation of additional LPARs for HA and testing.
